Do I need a separate business bank account?

Yes. This is the one piece of admin advice nobody regrets taking.

The short answer
Mixing personal and business money is the most common way owners lose their liability protection — and it makes tax time miserable.

If you formed an LLC to put a wall between the business and your personal life, running both through one account quietly knocks that wall down. Lawyers call it "piercing the veil." It means a court can decide the separation was never real.

The practical case

  • Tax time becomes sorting one clean list instead of untangling twelve months of mixed transactions.
  • You can see at a glance whether the business is actually making money.
  • Deductions are obvious rather than archaeological.
Do it early
Opening the account takes an afternoon once you have your formation paperwork and Tax ID. Doing it before the first customer payment saves untangling later.

What you will need

Your formation certificate, your Tax ID number, and a photo ID. Most banks let you apply online now. You do not need the fanciest business account — you need a separate one.
